This was the first all-welded steel tank barge on the Inland Waterways and featured an onboard pumping mechanism. These innovations were a vast improvement to environmental safety and efficiency of the barge.
This was the first boat on the Inland Waterways that had a clutching mechanism to switch from forward to reverse and back without stopping the engines. This was an innovation in safety and efficiency of operations and this system of engines, clutch, and reversing gear became the model for World War II landing crafts.
The M/V CODRINGTON and M/V WHITE GOLD formed one of the first fully-integrated Unit Tows on the Inland Waterways where the barges were specifically designed and built together to work as a unit. The streamlined design of the tow allowed for higher speed and fuel efficiency and remains the pattern for modern tows on the inland waterways today.
The M/V HAMILTON was the largest and most powerful boat of its time expressly designed for the Illinois Waterway. It was also the first boat to use steam to maintain a constant product temperature in its barges, which allowed for the transport of temperature-sensitive products.
This resulted in Canal Barge moving coal into Chicago-area power plants for nearly 20 years.
