1933

Canal Barge Company was founded with the tank barge CBC-1

This was the first all-welded steel tank barge on the Inland Waterways and featured an onboard pumping mechanism. These innovations were a vast improvement to environmental safety and efficiency of the barge.

1938

CBC built its first towboat, the M/V BULL CALF

This was the first boat on the Inland Waterways that had a clutching mechanism to switch from forward to reverse and back without stopping the engines. This was an innovation in safety and efficiency of operations and this system of engines, clutch, and reversing gear became the model for World War II landing crafts.
